Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary in Trivandrum

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is located about 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram city enroute to Ponmudi Hill Station.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala is a popular tourist destination among wildlife enthusiasts across the world. Visitors on the way to Ponmudi are charmed by the beauty of nature here, with herds of elephants, gaur, sambar, barking deer and wild boar often seen. The major peaks in the sanctuary are Chemmunjimottai (1717m), Athirumalai (1594m), Arumukhamkunnu (1457m), Koviltherimalai (1313m) and Nachiyadikunnu (957m).

Peppara sanctuary has several mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Thiruvananthapuram Wildlife Division has reported the sanctuary is home to 43 species of mammals, 233 species of birds, 46 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians and 27 species of fishes. Most commonly seen mammals in the wild life sanctuary are tiger, leopard, sloth bear, elephant, sambar (deer), bonnet macaque, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri tahr.

Peppara Dam

Peppara Dam is a masonry gravity dam on the Karamana River in Trivandrum District. The 423m long dam unifies all upper tributaries of the Karamana river and water flow to Aruvikkara is regulated to suit the needs of the Trivandrum city.

Special Attractions: Trekking to forest area – Bonafalls, Vazahuvanthole water falls,Kalarkad waterfalls, visit to settlement areas etc.

Best Time to Visit: October to March when the weather is pleasant and suitable for sightseeing and trekking.
